Claudio Giovanni Antonio Monteverdi was an Italian composer, conductor, singer and gambista. He developed his career working as a court musician of the Duke Vincenzo I Gonzaga in Mantua, and later assuming the musical direction of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice, emphasizing like composer of madrigals and operas. He was one of those responsible for moving from the polyphonic tradition of the Renaissance to a more free, dramatic and dissonant style, based on the monody and the conventions of continuous bass and vertical harmony, which became the central characteristics of the music of the following periods, Mannerism and the Baroque. Monteverdi is considered the last great madrigalist, certainly the greatest Italian composer of his generation, one of the great operatists of all time and one of the most influential personalities in the history of western music. He did not invent anything new, but his high musical stature derives from having employed existing resources ... Desenvolveu sua carreira trabalhando como músico da corte do duque Vincenzo I Gonzaga em Mântua, e depois assumindo a direção musical da Basílica de São Marcos em Veneza, destacando-se como compositor de madrigais e óperas. Foi um dos responsáveis pela passagem da tradição polifónica do Renascimento para um estilo mais livre, dramático e dissonante, baseado na monodia e nas convenções do baixo contínuo e da harmonia vertical, que se tornaram as características centrais da música dos períodos seguintes, o Maneirismo e o Barroco. Monteverdi é considerado o último grande madrigalista, certamente o maior compositor italiano de sua geração, um dos grandes operistas de todos os tempos e uma das personalidades mais influentes de toda a história da música do ocidente.
