Pessoas multilíngues superam os falantes monolíngues na população do mundo. O multilinguismo está se tornando um fenômeno social regido pelas necessidades da globalização e da abertura cultural. Graças à facilidade de acesso à informação causada pela Internet, a exposição das pessoas a múltiplas línguas está ficando cada vezes mais frequente e provocando, portanto, a necessidade de aprender diferentes línguas. O ensino de línguas poderá ser visto como um modelo de multilingue. As pessoas que falam mais de um idioma também são chamadas de poliglotas. O Multilinguismo é especialmente importante em zonas geográficas onde existem diversos países que têm relações de especial proximidade política, económica e social. A União Europeia surge como um exemplo claro desta realidade.
