Naja

Naja is a genus of venomous snakes from the Elapidae family, they range throughout Africa, Southwest Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Although several other genera share the common name, the Naja species is the most recognized and widespread group of commonly known snakes. The genus Naja consists of 20 to 22 species, but has undergone several taxonomic revisions in the last years, therefore, the sources vary a lot. They are also known by the popular names of cobra-capelo, cobra-de-capelo. They are venomous animals, aggressive and quite dangerous. Some species have the ability to raise a large part of the body and / or to spit the venom to defend themselves from predators at distances up to two meters. Other species, such as the Naja tripudians, dilate the neck when the animal is enraged. The trick is to "increase" its apparent size and frighten a possible predator. Behind the head, the naja may also have a white eye-like circle, also effective in frightening offenders who confuse it with a larger and more dangerous animal.
