Narva

Narva

Narva is the third largest city in Estonia. It is located in the far east of Estonia, on the border with Russia, on the banks of the Narva River, which rises on Lake Peipus. The city has 84.54 km² and a population of 67,497. Its population density is 798.4 / km². The city is located at coordinates 59 ° 23 'N 28 ° 12' E. Today, 86.41% of the population of Narva is of Russians, and their descendants, coming during the period of existence of the Soviet Union. Much of the city was destroyed during World War II, and during the years of reconstruction by the Russians, they forbade the return of the Estonian population to the city, thus justifying the drastic change in the ethnic distribution of Narva. Also for this reason, the population presents one of the largest concentrations of speakers of the Russian language.
