Nocebo

Nocebo

In its original application, nocebo has a very specific meaning in health areas such as medicine, pharmacology and psychopharmacology, as well as contributing a great deal of research in nosology and etiology of diseases. The term is used to denote harmful, harmful, unpleasant or undesirable reactions in an individual as a result of the application of an inert drug, where these reactions were not generated by the chemical or physical action of the same, but by the pessimistic belief and expectation of the individual that the drug could cause unwanted effects. In these cases, there is no "real" drug involved, but the psychic and physical adverse effects are real. A "classic" example of the nocebo effect would be that of the person dying of fear after being bitten by a non-venomous snake.
