Louis Pasteur was a French scientist. His discoveries were of enormous importance in the history of chemistry and medicine. He is remembered for his remarkable discoveries of the causes and preventions of diseases. Among his most notable achievements are the reduction of mortality and the creation of the first vaccine against rabies. His experiments gave grounds for the microbiological theory of disease. He was best known to the general public for inventing a method to prevent milk and wine from causing disease, a process that came to be called pasteurization. He is considered one of the top three founders of microbiology along with Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch. Pasteur also made many discoveries in the field of chemistry, mainly the molecular basis for the asymmetry of certain crystals. His body is buried under the Pasteur Institute in Paris, in a mausoleum decorated by Byzantine-style mosaics that resemble his achievements.

Entre seus feitos mais notáveis pode-se citar a redução da mortalidade e a criação da primeira vacina contra a raiva. Seus experimentos deram fundamento para a teoria microbiológica da doença. Foi mais conhecido do público em geral por inventar um método para impedir que leite e vinho causem doenças, um processo que veio a ser chamado pasteurização. Ele é considerado um dos três principais fundadores da microbiologia, juntamente com Ferdinand Cohn e Robert Koch. Pasteur também fez muitas descobertas no campo da química, principalmente a base molecular para a assimetria de certos cristais. Seu corpo está enterrado sob o Instituto Pasteur em Paris, em um mausoléu decorado por mosaicos em estilo bizantino que lembram suas realizações.
