Chuchu

The chuchu is a vegetable-fruit, that is, a vegetable of the fruit category; is also known as machucho, caiota or pimpinela. It exists in abundance in the island of Madeira, mainly next to the waterways. In Latin countries it is known as Chayote, while in English-speaking countries it is known as christophene, vegetable pear, mirliton, choko, starprecianté, citrayota, chow chow or pear squash. Although it is a vegetable, that is, it can be grown in the home garden, it is considered a fruit, like tomato. O chuchu é uma hortaliça-fruto, ou seja, um vegetal da categoria dos frutos; também é conhecido como machucho, caiota ou pimpinela. Existe em abundância na ilha da Madeira, principalmente junto aos cursos de água. Em países latinos é conhecido como Chayote, enquanto em países de língua inglesa é conhecido por christophene, vegetable pear, mirliton, choko, starprecianté, citrayota, chow chow or pear squash. Apesar de ser uma hortaliça, ou seja, poder ser cultivada na horta caseira, é considerada um fruto, tal como o tomate.
