Ping

Ping or latency as we call it, is a utility that uses the ICMP protocol to test connectivity between devices. It is a command available on almost all operating systems. Its operation consists in sending packages to the target equipment and in the "listening" of the answers. If the target equipment is active, a "response" (the "pong", an analogy to the famous ping-pong game) is returned to the requesting computer. The author of the tool, Mike Muuss, gave him this name because it resembled the sound that the sonar emitted. (After Dave Mills came up with a meaning for the acronym, "Packet Internet Grouper (Groper)," something like "Internet Package Provisor") The usefulness of ping to help diagnose Internet connectivity problems was weakened in late 2003, when many Internet Service Providers have activated filters for ICMP Type 8 (echo request) on their routers.
