Pique

Pique is a medieval rod-shaped weapon used by the piqueiros, who in turn formed the base of the medieval infantry. The pike consisted of a spear of approximately 3 to 5 meters, with a metal tip. Pique was the main weapon used against enemy cavalry. Even after the emergence of firearms, the sting continued to be used. The primitive cannons, arquebuses and muskets had very slow and imprecise firing, so the pikemen, in close order, formed the nucleus of the European infantry until the middle of the seventeenth century. Its maximum expression was the Spanish Third. The invention of the bayonet, in the middle of the seventeenth century, would eventually make the pike obsolete by the end of the same century, as it enabled the Musketeer to defend himself during the reloading process. In the French army was totally abolished in 1704, although it reappeared, when the first conflicts generated by the French Revolution. In Portugal, at the time of the French invasions, it was a resource widely used by the people, since the invaders had completely disarmed the country. References ↑ Verbruggen, Art of Warfare, 151 ... Referências ↑ Verbruggen, Art of Warfare, 151...
