Primates

Primatas

The order of the Primates is a group of mammals that comprise the popularly called monkeys, apes, lemurs and humans. It is divided informally into apes and prosimians. Primates arose from arboreal ancestors in the rainforests; many of the characteristics of this order are adaptations to this way of life. However, some primates are partially arboreal. With the exception of humans, who inhabit all continents, most primates live in tropical and subtropical forests of the Americas, Africa and Asia. They vary in extreme form in size, going from Microcebus berthae, that weighs 30 g, until Gorilla beringei graueri, that can weigh more than 200 kg. According to the fossil record, the most primitive ancestors of primates lived in the Upper Cretaceous about 65 million years ago; the oldest known primate is Plesiadapis, from the Late Paleocene, between 55 and 58 million years ago. Molecular clock studies suggest that the origin of this order is older, with estimates around 85 million years ago in the Middle Cretaceous.
