Golden lion moth, also known simply as lion moth, saguipiranga and sauimpiranga, is a primate species endemic to Brazil, the subfamily Callitrichinae and genus Leontopithecus. It occurs exclusively in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, but some authors have already considered its occurrence in southern Espírito Santo. Currently, they are found mainly in the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve and the União Biological Reserve, and live in the highest strata of the forest. They can be found in stretches of secondary forest. It has already been considered as a subspecies, today it is a proper species, like the other species of lion tamarins. Evidence from phylogenetic studies shows that the black lion tamarin is the closest species to the golden lion tamarin. There are no known fossils of this species. Along with other lion tamarins is the largest member of the subfamily Callitrichinae, and can weigh up to 800g. It has a coat ranging from golden to orange and a very characteristic mane, which gave it the popular name. Mico-leão-dourado, também conhecido simplesmente como mico-leão, saguipiranga e sauimpiranga, é uma espécie de primata endêmica do Brasil, da subfamília Callitrichinae e gênero Leontopithecus. Ocorre exclusivamente na Mata Atlântica brasileira, no estado do Rio de Janeiro, mas alguns autores já consideraram sua ocorrência no sul do Espírito Santo. Atualmente, são encontrados principalmente na Reserva Biológica Poço das Antas e na Reserva Biológica União, e vivem nos estratos mais altos da floresta. Podem ser encontrados em trechos de floresta secundária. Já foi considerado como uma subespécie, hoje é uma espécie propriamente dita, como as outras espécies de micos-leões. Evidências de estudos filogenéticos mostram que o mico-leão-preto é a espécie mais próxima do mico-leão-dourado. Não existem fósseis conhecidos dessa espécie. Junto com outros micos-leões é o maior membro da subfamília Callitrichinae, podendo pesar até 800g. Possui uma pelagem que varia de dourado a alaranjado e uma juba muito característica, que lhe conferiu o nome popular.
