Termite

Termite

A termite reaction is a type of aluminothermic reaction in which the aluminum metal is oxidized by the oxide of another metal - generally, iron oxide. The termite name is also used for the blending of these two reactants. Such a reaction is so exothermic that its temperature exceeds 3500 ° C, which can melt tungsten - which is sometimes mistakenly considered an explosive. The reaction products, in addition to the heat produced, are the aluminum oxide, in addition to the metals in their pure form, mixed together. The termite was invented in 1893 and patented in 1895 by the German chemist Dr. Hans Goldschmidt, so the reaction is sometimes referred to as the "Goldschmidt Reaction" or "Goldschmidt Process".
