Tupinambás

Tupinambás

Tupinambás is the name of a Brazilian indigenous people who, until the sixteenth century, inhabited two regions of the Brazilian coast: the first trip from the right bank of the São Francisco River to the Recôncavo Baiano; the second covered the southern coast of the present state of Rio de Janeiro and the north coast of the present state of São Paulo. This second group was also called thamo. They consisted of 100,000 individuals. They were the best-known indigenous nation on the Brazilian coast by European navigators of the 16th century. Currently, there is an indigenous group in the south of the state of Bahia that claims to descend from the Tupinambás: they are the Tupinambás of Olivença. Este segundo grupo também era chamado de tamoio . Compunham-se de 100 000 indivíduos. Eram a nação indígena mais conhecida da costa brasileira pelos navegadores europeus do século XVI.
