Vesta

Vesta

Vesta is a Roman goddess who personifies the sacred fire, the domestic pyre and the city. It corresponds to the Hestia of the Greeks, although their worship in the Italian peninsula precedes the Hellenic influence in the Roman world, and, to a degree, the Agni of the Hindus. It was very common to use his image in the homes of young people who would gain knowledge away from their homeland. Courted by the gods, and especially by the beautiful Apollo and by Neptune, Vesta rejected all the loving proposals and managed that the own Jupiter protected his virginity. Because of her desire to remain chaste, her priestesses, the Vestals, who kept a watchful eye on the sacred fire in the temples, were also kept that way. From where came the expression Vestal virgin. Vesta was the eldest daughter of Cibele and Saturn, the eldest sister of the first generation of Olympic gods, and the maiden of the second. By right of primogeniture, it was one of the twelve main Olympic goddesses. It was swallowed by Saturn and later rescued by Jupiter.
