Atlas, one of Titans, son of Iapetus and Clymene, and brother of Epimetheus and Prometheus. She had many girls with Pleione, daughter of Oceanus (v. Atlantides), and with Hesperis (v. Hesperides). Atlas participated in the struggle between the giants \u0026 the first generation of monstrous, violent divinities; and Olympians. Defeated by the latter, he was punished by Zeus, being condemned to everlasting the heavenly vault on his shoulders. According to another tradition, Atlas was hardened by Perseus, being transformed into a rock at the sight of the Medusa (v. And Perseus).
