culbéc (culbéci),s. m. – Melc. – Var.culbeci, colbec(i), (cu)culbec, cucumelc, cotobelc, codobelc, cocobelc, cocobeică, cuculbeu, culcubeu, etc. Origine incertă, dar probabil expresivă. DAR tratează separat codobelc, pe care îl consideră der. de la coadă și berc, cu sensul de „fără coadă”, care se potrivește efectiv melcului; însă această der. nu pare naturală. Este mai probabil vorba de o repetiție expresivă, cu alternanța consoanelor, fenomen foarte cunoscut în toate limbile, cf.tura-vura, tanda-manda, cioc-boc, cîr-mîr, etc. Dacă se admite această ipoteză, plecîndu-se, cum pare că trebuie să se facă, de la limbajul copiilor, în care se folosesc exclusiv multe din var., am avea, plecînd de la melc, o formulă de tipul *melcu belcu (înțeleasă ca *mel cubelcu), care, cu reduplicarea sa firească *melcu cubelcu, este deajuns pentru a explica toate formele cuvîntului. Pînă acum sînt puține studii asupra acestuia. Pentru Philippide, II, 710, este pur și simplu obscură; Byck-Graur, BL, I, 23, cred că forma primitivă este cubelci, su sing. analog; iar Scriban o explică prin *ciulbec, metateză de la belciug.
