Homo faber

Homo faber

Homo faber is a philosophical concept proposed by Hannah Arendt and Max Scheler describing man's ability to control the environment by means of tools. Henri Bergson used the concept in the Creation Evolution to designate the primitive man who himself did the necessary tools, and defined the intelligence as "the imagination by what seems to be the original attitude, is the skill to manufacture artificial objects, especially tools to do tools, and unlimited manufacturing. " In Latin literature, Appiud Claudius Caecus used the term in the Sententiae, referring to man's ability to control his destiny and his surroundings: "Homo faber suae quisque fortunae." In ancient anthropological theories, homo faber, defined as "the man who works", is in contrast to homo ludens, "the man who is playing." Also in another relation of opposition is the expression deus faber, an archetype of all gods.
