Water algae or algae are a group of aquatic creatures that are relatively unrelated to the plant kingdom, although the vast majority are photosynthetic and resemble plants. Although the definition of "algae" is mostly used for water algae; It is a general term that includes groups of algae, black algae and water algae. Water algae, unlike plants, can not store photosynthesis products in the form of starch. Chloroplasts are found not on the cytoplasm free, but on the endoplasmic reticulum. It carries chlorophyll-c and contains other pigment substances not found in plants. These pigments give special colors to various water algae groups. It is called "tallus" in the water moss, the parts of the body that are similar to the leaf, the body in plants, but not the veins, which are not specialized. Creeps occur in two parts, budding, growth of the main plant, production of sporocytes or gonads. Photosynthetic water algae are important because they are the first generation producers of aquatic environments.

Su yosunları ya da Algler, büyük çoğunluğu fotosentetik olmasına ve bitkilere benzemesine karşın, bitkiler alemiyle yakın akraba olmayan bir grup sucul canlı grubudur. "Yosun" tanımı çoğunlukla su yosunları için kullanılsa da; yosunlar, kara yosunları ve su yosunları gruplarını kapsayan genel bir terimdir. Su yosunları, bitkilerin aksine, fotosentez ürünlerini nişasta formunda depolamazlar. Kloroplastları, sitoplazma içerisinde serbest olarak değil, granüller endoplazmik retikulum üzerinde bulunur. Klorofil-c taşırlar ve bitkilerde bulunmayan başka pigment maddeleri bulundurular. Çeşitli su yosunu gruplarına özel renklerini bu pigment maddeleri verir. Su yosunlarında, bitkilerdeki yaprak, gövde gibi elemanlarına benzeyen, ancak damar dokusu taşımayan, özelleşmemiş vücut bölümlerine "tallus" denir. Üremeleri, ikiye bölünme, tomurcuklanma, ana bitkinin büyümesi, spor hücrelerinin ya da eşey hücrelerinin üretilmesi şeklinde gerçekleşir. Fotosentetik su yosunları, sucul ortamların birinci derecedeki üreticileri olduklarından önemlidirler.
