Savan or savanna is a large meadow in the transition zone between tropical rainforests and dry deserts. In the tropical regions where the dry season lasts long, it is a plant community consisting of large meadows sprinkled with only one tree. The savannah, which is the main plant community in South Africa and East Africa, consists of rhizome plants and wheatgrass, which are sometimes about two meters tall. This region provides a suitable environment for some of the world's most interesting wildlife species. The mature steeps of the main and the wide meadows of North America are also used as pastures. Since geographical regions do not have exact boundaries, they are translated by transition regions. This also applies to the vegetation belt. Not enough for the growth of large forests, but also large meadows in certain areas of precipitation. These meadows are called tropical steppes in less rainfall areas and in the subtropical areas, and in the inner parts of the continents are called steppe. They are tall grass communities in tropical climate regions.

Savan ya da savana tropik yağmur ormanları ile kuru çöller arasındaki geçiş bölgesinde yer alan geniş çayırlara denir. Kurak mevsimin uzun sürdüğü tropikal bölgelerde, tek tük ağaçlar serpili büyük çayırlardan oluşan bir bitki topluluğudur. Güney Afrika'da ve Doğu Afrika'da başlıca bitki topluluğu olan savan, boyları yer yer iki metreyi bulabilen köksaplı bitkilerden ve buğdaygillerden oluşur. Bu bölge dünyanın en ilginç yabani hayvan türlerinden bazılarının yaşaması için uygun bir ortam sağlar. Ana'nın görece kurak stepleri ile Kuzey Amerika'nın geniş çayırları da otlak olarak kullanılan alanlardandır. Coğrafi bölgelerin kesin sınırları olmadığından bunlar geçiş bölgeleriyle çevrilidir. Bu durum bitki örtüsü kuşakları için de geçerlidir. Büyük ormanların yetişmesi için yeterli olmamakla birlikte belirli ölçüde yağış alan bölgelerde geniş çayırlar uzanır. Bu çayırlara tropik bölgelerin daha az yağış alan kesimlerinde ve astropik bölgelerde savan, kıtaların iç kesimlerinde ise step denir. Tropikal iklim bölgelerinde görülen uzun boylu ot topluluklarıdır.
