Sterols, or steroidal alcohols, are a subset of steroids and possess a hydroxyl group at the 3-position of ring A. Amphipathic lipids synthesized from acetyl coenzyme A The molecule has a flat shape. The hydroxyl is in the A-ring, the molecule is the backward apoly. Sterols are important in the physiology of eukaryotic organisms. They take place in the cell membrane and regulate its fluidity and function. They also contribute to the development process as secondary messengers. Different organisms use different sterols. The most important ones are cholesterol, phytosterol and steroid hormones in animals, ergosterol in fungi, campesterol in plants, sitosterol and stigmaster. Asetil koenzim A'dan sentezlenen amfipatik lipitlerdir. Molekül olarak yassı bir şekilleri vardır. A halkasındaki hidroksil polardır, molekülün geri kalanı apolardır.
