Molecular sieves are materials that contain fine and single tiny pores that can be used to adsorb gases or liquids. Small enough molecules can be adsorbed through the pores, and larger molecules can not. Unlike an ordinary sieve, it is operated at the molecular level. For example, a molecule that is small enough to pass through but larger than it does not work. Therefore, molecular sieves are commonly used as desiccants. A molecular sieve can absorb up to 22% of its own weight of water. Usually molecular sieves consist of aluminosilicate minerals, as well as synthetic mixtures or compounds. These compounds have an open structure that allows small molecules to diffuse, such as clay, porous glass, microporous charcoal, activated carbon and the like. Molecular sieves are often used in the oil industry, especially for the purification of gases. For example, silica gel can be used to adsorb the mercury in natural gas to corrosion of aluminum pipes and other liquefaction equipment. The regeneration method of molecular sieves involves changing the pressure in an oxygen concentrator and, when used for ethanol dehydration, can also be heated and cleaned with carrier gas. ...
