Fluorene (ㄨ '), is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, the formula for the C13H10. White flaky crystals, impure when there is fluorescence, similar to the characteristic aroma of naphthalene. Exist in the automotive exhaust, corn and coal tar in the high boiling components. Combustible. Insoluble in water, soluble in benzene, carbon disulfide, ethanol and ether. Fluorene can be synthesized industrially and used as a precursor for indomethacin dyes, plastics, and insecticides. It can be synthesized from 9-fluorenone, 9-fluorenyl alcohol and trinitrofluorenone (for electrostatic copying) and other chemicals. Polyfluorene can be used as a light emitter in an organic light emitting diode. The 9-position proton of the fluorene is acidic and pKa is 22.6 (DMSO) and can be removed by a base such as sodium hydroxide to form an orange-yellow aromatic anion. The anion can act as a nucleophile and react with the electrophilic reagent at the 9-position. The fluorene derivative, chloroform-9-fluorenylmethyl ester (Fmoc-Cl), is used to give the amino group with a fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl protecting group in peptide synthesis. ...
