La primera definición de acento en el diccionario es el modo característico de pronunciación de una persona o grupo, especialmente uno que traiciona el origen social o geográfico. Otra definición de acento es una marca (como (), (ˌ), 'o `) utilizada por escrito para indicar el énfasis o la prominencia de una sílaba. Tal marca también puede usarse para indicar que se debe pronunciar una sílaba escrita, especialmente cuando dicha pronunciación no es habitual, como en turnèd. El acento también es el estrés rítmico en verso o prosa.

Other definition of accent is a mark (such as (ˈ), (ˌ), ´ or `) used in writing to indicate the stress or prominence of a syllable.
