La suspensión activa y la suspensión adaptable / suspensión semiactiva son tipos de suspensiones automotrices que controlan el movimiento vertical de las ruedas con un sistema de a bordo, en lugar de suspensiones pasivas donde el movimiento está determinado enteramente por la superficie de la carretera. Las suspensiones activas se pueden dividir generalmente en dos clases principales: suspensiones activas puras y suspensiones adaptativas / semi-activas. Estas tecnologías permiten a los fabricantes de automóviles para lograr un mayor grado de calidad de conducción y manejo del automóvil por mantener los neumáticos perpendiculares a la carretera en las esquinas, lo que permite una mejor tracción y control. Un ordenador de a bordo detecta el movimiento del cuerpo desde los sensores a través del vehículo y, utilizando los datos calculados mediante técnicas de control oportunas, controla la acción de las suspensiones activa y semiautomática.
