Un perfil aerodinámico o aerofoil es la forma de un ala o cuchilla o vela como se ve en la sección transversal. Un cuerpo en forma de perfil aerodinámico movido a través de un fluido produce una fuerza aerodinámica. El componente de esta fuerza perpendicular a la dirección del movimiento se llama elevación. El componente paralelo a la dirección del movimiento se llama arrastre. Los aerodinámicos de vuelo subsónicos tienen una forma característica con un borde delantero redondeado, seguido de un borde de arista agudo, a menudo con curvatura asimétrica de superficies superior e inferior. Las láminas de función similar diseñadas con agua como fluido de trabajo se llaman hidroplanos. El ascensor en un perfil aerodinámico es principalmente el resultado de su ángulo de ataque y forma. Cuando está orientado en un ángulo adecuado, el perfil aerodinámico desvía el aire que se aproxima, dando como resultado una fuerza sobre el perfil aerodinámico en la dirección opuesta a la deformación. Esta fuerza se conoce como fuerza aerodinámica y se puede resolver en dos componentes: levantar y arrastrar. La mayoría de las formas de lámina requieren un ángulo de ataque positivo para generar elevación, pero las superficies aerodinámicas curvadas pueden generar elevación en ángulo de ataque cero.
