Las algas son un grupo muy grande y diverso de organismos eucariotas, que van desde géneros unicelulares como Chlorella y las diatomeas hasta formas multicelulares como el alga gigante, un gran alga marrón que puede llegar a medir hasta 50 metros de longitud. La mayoría son autotróficos y carecen de muchos de los distintos tipos de células y tejidos encontrados en plantas terrestres como estomas, xilema y floema. Las algas marinas más grandes y complejas se llaman algas marinas, mientras que las formas de agua dulce más complejas son la Charophyta, una división de algas que incluye a Spirogyra y las matorrales. No existe una definición generalmente aceptada de algas. Una definición es que las algas "tienen clorofila como su pigmento fotosintético primario y carecen de una cubierta estéril de células alrededor de sus células reproductoras". Otros autores excluyen a todos los procariotas y por lo tanto no consideran las cianobacterias como algas. Las algas constituyen un grupo polifilético ya que no incluyen un ancestro común, y aunque sus plástidos parecen tener un solo origen, a partir de cianobacterias, se adquirieron de diferentes maneras. Las algas verdes son ejemplos de algas que tienen cloroplastos primarios derivados de cianobacterias endosimbióticas.
