Algol
Algol, conocida coloquialmente como la estrella del demonio, es una estrella brillante en la constelación Perseus. Es uno de los binarios eclipsantes más conocidos, la primera estrella que se ha descubierto, y también una de las primeras estrellas variables que se descubrieron. Algol es en realidad un sistema de tres estrellas en el que la beta primaria grande y brillante Beta Persei A es regularmente eclipsada por el dimmer Beta Persei B. Así, la magnitud de Algol es generalmente casi constante en 2,1, pero regularmente se sumerge a 3,4 cada 2 días, 20 Horas y 49 minutos durante los eclipses parciales de aproximadamente 10 horas de duración. También hay un eclipse secundario cuando la estrella más brillante oculta el secundario más débil. Este eclipse secundario sólo puede ser detectado fotoeléctricamente. Algol da su nombre a su clase de variable eclipsante, conocida como variables Algol.
