La alometría es el estudio de la relación del tamaño corporal con la forma, la anatomía, la fisiología y finalmente el comportamiento, descritas por primera vez por Otto Snell en 1892, D'Arcy Thompson en 1917 y Julian Huxley en 1932. La alometría es un estudio bien conocido, Análisis de la forma estadística para sus desarrollos teóricos, así como en biología para aplicaciones prácticas a las tasas de crecimiento diferencial de las partes del cuerpo de un organismo vivo. Una aplicación se encuentra en el estudio de diversas especies de insectos, donde un pequeño cambio en el tamaño total del cuerpo puede conducir a un aumento enorme y desproporcionado en las dimensiones de los apéndices como las piernas, las antenas o los cuernos. La relación entre las dos cantidades medidas se expresa a menudo como una ley de poder: o en una forma logarítmica: donde es el exponente de escala de la ley. Métodos para estimar este exponente a partir de datos de uso de tipo 2 regresiones como la regresión del eje mayor o la reducción de la regresión del eje mayor, ya que estas explican la variación en ambas variables, contrariamente a la regresión de mínimos cuadrados, que no explica la varianza de error en la variable independiente.
