Ani es una ruinosa ciudad medieval armenia situada en la provincia turca de Kars, cerca de la frontera con Armenia. Entre 961 y 1045 fue la capital del reino armenio medieval que cubrió gran parte de Armenia actual y Turquía oriental. La ciudad está situada en un sitio triangular, visualmente dramático y naturalmente defensivo, protegido en su lado del este por el barranco del río Akhurian y en su lado occidental por el valle de Bostanlar o de Tzaghkotzadzor. El Akhurian es una rama del río Araks y forma parte de la actual frontera entre Turquía y Armenia. Llamada la "Ciudad de 1001 Iglesias", Ani estaba en varias rutas comerciales y sus muchos edificios religiosos, palacios y fortificaciones estaban entre las estructuras tecnicamente y artísticamente más avanzadas del mundo. En su apogeo, Ani tenía una población de 100.000-200.000 habitantes y era el rival de Constantinopla, Bagdad y Damasco. Ani fue renombrada por su esplendor y magnificencia, fue abandonada y en gran parte olvidada tras el terremoto de 1319.
