Antíoco III el Grande
Antíoco III el Grande era un rey seléucida y el sexto gobernante del Imperio seléucida. Él gobernó sobre la región de Siria y de partes grandes del resto de Asia occidental hacia el final del 3ro siglo AC. Ascendiendo al trono a la edad de dieciocho años en 222 AC, sus primeras campañas contra el Reino Ptolemaic no tuvieron éxito, pero en los años siguientes Antiochus ganó varias victorias militares. Su designación tradicional, el Grande, refleja un epíteto que él asumió brevemente. También asumió el título Basileus Megas, el título tradicional de los reyes persas. Antíoco restauró gran parte del territorio del Imperio seléucida, antes de sufrir un grave revés, hacia el final de su reinado, en su guerra contra Roma. Declarándose a sí mismo "el campeón de la libertad griega contra la dominación romana", Antíoco III emprendió una guerra contra la República romana en la Grecia continental en otoño de 192 aC para ser derrotada.
