Este grupo incluye cerdos, pecaríes, hippopotamuses, camellos, llamas, chevrotains (ciervos del ratón), ciervos, jirafas, pronghorn, antílopes, ovejas, cabras, y ganado. El grupo excluye a las ballenas (Cetacea) aunque los datos de secuencia de ADN indican que comparten un antepasado común, haciendo el grupo paraphyletic. El grupo filogeneticamente preciso es Cetartiodactyla (de Cetacea + Artiodactyla). Existen alrededor de 220 especies de artiodáctilos, entre ellas muchas de gran importancia dietética, económica y cultural para los seres humanos. Otra característica distintiva del grupo es la forma del astrágalo (talud), un hueso en la articulación del tobillo, que tiene una estructura de doble polea. Esto le da al pie una mayor flexibilidad.
