Los abejarucos son un grupo de aves cercanas a la familia de los Meropidae. La mayoría de las especies se encuentran en África y Asia, pero otras ocurren en el sur de Europa, Australia y Nueva Guinea. Se caracterizan por plumaje ricamente coloreado, cuerpos delgados y por lo general plumas alargadas de cola central. Todos tienen billetes abatidos largos y alas puntiagudas, que les dan una apariencia de golondrina cuando se ven desde lejos. Hay 26 especies diferentes de abejarucos. Como su nombre sugiere, los abejarucos comen predominantemente insectos voladores, especialmente abejas y avispas, que son atrapados en el aire por salidas de una perca abierta. Mientras persiguen cualquier tipo de insecto volador, las abejas predominan en su dieta. Los himenópteros comprenden del 20% al 96% de todos los insectos comidos, con abejas de miel que comprenden aproximadamente un tercio de los himenópteros. Antes de comer su comida, un comedor de abejas quita el aguijón golpeando y frotando repetidamente el insecto sobre una superficie dura. Durante este proceso, se aplica presión al insecto extrayendo de este modo la mayor parte del veneno. En particular, las aves sólo cogen presas que están en el ala e ignoran los insectos voladores una vez que aterrizan. Los abejarucos son gregarios.
