Las elecciones se llevaron a cabo en 650 circunscripciones en todo el Reino Unido bajo el sistema del primero en el pasado. Ninguna de las partes alcanzó los 326 escaños necesarios para una mayoría general. El Partido Conservador, liderado por David Cameron, ganó el mayor número de votos y escaños, pero todavía quedó veinte escaños. Esto dio lugar a un parlamento colgado donde ningún partido podía comandar una mayoría en la Cámara de los Comunes. Esta fue sólo la segunda elección general desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial para devolver un parlamento colgado, siendo la primera las elecciones de febrero de 1974.
