En sistemas informáticos y electrónicos, decimal codificado en binario es una clase de codificaciones binarias de números decimales, donde cada dígito decimal está representado por un número fijo de bits, usualmente cuatro u ocho, aunque otros tamaños se han utilizado históricamente. Patrones de bits especiales a veces se utilizan para un signo o para otras indicaciones. En los sistemas orientados a bytes, el término BCD no comprimido suele implicar un byte completo para cada dígito, mientras que BCD empaquetado normalmente codifica dos dígitos decimales dentro de un solo byte aprovechando el hecho de que cuatro bits son suficientes para representar el rango de 0 a 9. La codificación precisa de 4 bits puede variar sin embargo, por razones técnicas, vea Exceso-3 por ejemplo. La principal virtud de BCD es su representación más exacta y redondeo de cantidades decimales, así como una facilidad de conversión en representaciones legibles por humanos, en comparación con sistemas de posición binarios. Los principales inconvenientes de BCD son un pequeño aumento en la complejidad de los circuitos necesarios para implementar aritmética básica y un almacenamiento ligeramente menos denso. BCD se utilizó en muchos primeros decimal computadoras.
