Un objeto BL Lacertae o un objeto BL Lac es un tipo de galaxia activa con un núcleo galáctico activo y lleva el nombre de su prototipo BL Lacertae. En contraste con otros tipos de núcleos galácticos activos, BL Lacs se caracterizan por la variabilidad de flujo de rápida y gran amplitud y polarización óptica significativa. Debido a estas propiedades, el prototipo de la clase originalmente se creía que era una estrella variable. Cuando se compara con los núcleos activos más luminosos con líneas de emisión fuertes, los objetos BL Lac tienen un espectro dominado por un continuo no térmico no característico. En el esquema unificado de núcleos galácticos activos radio-altos, la fenomenología nuclear observada de BL Lacs se interpreta como debida a los efectos del chorro relativista que está estrechamente alineado con la línea de visión del observador. BL Lacs se cree que son intrínsecamente idénticas a las radio galaxias de baja potencia. Estos núcleos activos se alojan en galaxias esferoidales masivas.
