Nitruro de boro
El nitruro de boro es un compuesto químico con la fórmula química BN, que consiste en números iguales de átomos de boro y nitrógeno. BN es isoelectrónico a una red de carbono estructurada de forma similar y, por lo tanto, existe en diversas formas cristalinas. La forma hexagonal correspondiente al grafito es la más estable y más blanda entre los polimorfos BN y, por lo tanto, se utiliza como lubricante y como aditivo para los productos cosméticos. La variedad cúbica análoga al diamante se denomina c-BN. Su dureza es inferior sólo al diamante, pero su estabilidad térmica y química es superior. La rara modificación BN wurtzite es similar a la lonsdaleita e incluso puede ser más difícil que la forma cúbica. Debido a la excelente estabilidad térmica y química, las cerámicas de nitruro de boro se utilizan tradicionalmente como partes de equipos de alta temperatura. El nitruro de boro tiene potencial uso en nanotecnología. Se pueden producir nanotubos de BN que tienen una estructura similar a la de los nanotubos de carbono, es decir, hojas de grafeno enrolladas sobre sí mismas, pero las propiedades son muy diferentes.
