Tronco encefálico
En la anatomía de los seres humanos y de muchos otros vertebrados, el tronco encefálico es la parte posterior del cerebro, contigua y estructuralmente continua con la médula espinal. En los seres humanos se describe generalmente como incluyendo la médula oblongata, la protuberancia y el mesencéfalo. Con menor frecuencia, se incluyen partes del diencéfalo. El tronco encefálico proporciona el motor principal y la inervación sensorial a la cara y al cuello a través de los nervios craneales. De los doce pares de nervios craneales, diez pares provienen del tronco encefálico. Aunque pequeña, esta es una parte extremadamente importante del cerebro, ya que las conexiones nerviosas del motor y los sistemas sensoriales desde la parte principal del cerebro hasta el resto del cuerpo pasan a través del tronco encefálico. Esto incluye el tracto corticoespinal, la vía de la columna posterior, el trayecto medial del lemnisco y el tracto espinotalámico. El tronco encefálico también desempeña un papel importante en la regulación de la función cardíaca y respiratoria. También regula el sistema nervioso central y es fundamental para mantener la conciencia y regular el ciclo del sueño.
