Calorímetro
Un calorímetro es un objeto utilizado para la calorimetría, o el proceso de medir el calor de las reacciones químicas o cambios físicos, así como la capacidad de calor. Los calorímetros de barrido diferencial, los microcalorímetros isotérmicos, los calorímetros de titulación y los calorímetros de velocidad acelerada se encuentran entre los tipos más comunes. Un calorímetro sencillo consiste simplemente en un termómetro unido a un recipiente de metal lleno de agua suspendido por encima de una cámara de combustión. Para encontrar el cambio de entalpia por mol de una sustancia A en una reacción entre dos sustancias A y B, las sustancias se añaden a un calorímetro y se observan las temperaturas inicial y final. Multiplicar el cambio de temperatura por la masa y las capacidades caloríficas específicas de las sustancias da un valor para la energía emitida o absorbida durante la reacción. Dividiendo el cambio de energía por cuantos moles de A estaban presentes da su cambio de entalpía de reacción. Este método se utiliza principalmente en la enseñanza académica, ya que describe la teoría de la calorimetría. No tiene en cuenta la pérdida de calor a través del recipiente o la capacidad calorífica del termómetro y del propio recipiente.
