Cefalización
La cefalización se considera una tendencia evolutiva, en la que el tejido nervioso, a lo largo de muchas generaciones, se concentra en un extremo de un organismo. Este proceso eventualmente produce una región de la cabeza con órganos sensoriales. La cefalización está intrínsecamente conectada con un cambio de simetría. Acompañó el movimiento a la simetría bilateral hecha en gusanos platos, con ocelli y pinnae colocados en la región principal. Además de una concentración de órganos de los sentidos, todos los animales de anélidos también colocan la boca en la región de la cabeza. Este proceso también está ligado al desarrollo de un cerebro anterior en los cordados de la notocorda. Una excepción notable a la tendencia de la cefalización a lo largo del avance evolutivo es el phylum Echinodermata, que aunque tiene un antepasado bilateral, como lo demuestra su embriología, se convierte en un animal pentaradial sin ganglios neurales concentrados ni región de la cabeza sensorial. Sin embargo, algunos equinodermos han desarrollado simetría bilateral secundariamente. En la neuroembriología, la inducción neural del ectodermo forma un tubo neural que se somete a cefalización para formar inicialmente tres, luego cinco vesículas como embrión en desarrollo.
