Charles XI también Carl, sueco: Karl XI fue rey de Suecia desde 1660 hasta su muerte, en un período en la historia sueca conocida como el imperio sueco. Charles era el único hijo del rey Charles X de Suecia y de Hedwig Eleonora de Holstein-Gottorp. Su padre murió cuando tenía cinco años, por lo que Carlos fue educado por sus gobernadores hasta su coronación a la edad de diecisiete años. Poco después, fue obligado a realizar expediciones militares para asegurar los recién adquiridos dominios de las tropas danesas en la Guerra de Scanian. Habiendo luchado con éxito contra los daneses, volvió a Estocolmo y se comprometió a corregir la situación política, financiera y económica del país, logrando sostener la paz durante los restantes 20 años de su reinado. Durante este período surgieron cambios en las finanzas, el comercio, los armamentos marítimos y terrestres nacionales, el procedimiento judicial, el gobierno de la iglesia y la educación. Carlos XI fue sucedido por su único hijo Charles XII, que hizo uso del ejército bien entrenado en batallas por toda Europa. El hecho de que Charles fuera coronado como Charles XI no significa que él era el décimoprimer rey de Suecia que tenía el nombre Charles.
