Carlos XII de Suecia
Carlos XII también Carl, latinizado a Carolus Rex, era el rey de Suecia de 1697 a 1718. Pertenecía a la casa del Palatinado-Zweibrücken, una línea secundaria de la casa de Wittelsbach. Carlos fue el único hijo superviviente de Carlos XI y Ulrika Eleonora el Viejo. Asumió el poder, después de siete meses de gobierno provisional, a la edad de quince años. En 1700, una triple alianza de Dinamarca-Noruega, Sajonia-Polonia-Lituania y Rusia lanzó un triple ataque contra el protectorado sueco de Holstein-Gottorp sueco y las provincias de Livonia e Ingria, con el fin de sacar provecho ya que Suecia no estaba alineada y gobernada por un Joven e inexperto rey, iniciando así la Gran Guerra del Norte. Liderando el formidable ejército sueco contra la alianza, Carlos había obligado en 1706 a someter a todos sus enemigos excepto a Rusia. La posterior marcha de Carlos sobre Moscú terminó con el desmembramiento del ejército sueco en Poltava y Perevolochna, y pasó los siguientes años en el exilio en el Imperio Otomano antes de volver a dirigir un asalto a Noruega, tratando de expulsar al rey danés de la guerra una vez Más para apuntar todas sus fuerzas a los rusos.
