Quimiosmosis
Quimiosmosis es el movimiento de iones a través de una membrana selectivamente permeable, por su gradiente electroquímico. Más específicamente, se refiere a la generación de ATP por el movimiento de iones hidrógeno a través de una membrana durante la respiración celular. Un gradiente de iones tiene energía potencial y puede utilizarse para impulsar reacciones químicas cuando los iones atraviesan un canal. Los iones de hidrógeno se difundirán desde un área de alta concentración de protones hasta un área de menor concentración de protones. Peter Mitchell propuso que un gradiente de concentración electroquímica de protones a través de una membrana podría ser aprovechado para hacer ATP.
