Radiación Cherenkov
La radiación de Cherenkov, también conocida como radiación de Vavilov-Cherenkov, es la radiación electromagnética emitida cuando una partícula cargada pasa a través de un medio dieléctrico a una velocidad mayor que la velocidad de fase de la luz en ese medio. El resplandor azul característico de un reactor nuclear subacuático se debe a la radiación Cherenkov. Su nombre se debe al científico soviético Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov, ganador del Premio Nobel de 1958, que fue el primero en detectarlo experimentalmente. Una teoría de este efecto se desarrolló posteriormente en el marco de la teoría de la relatividad especial de Einstein por Igor Tamm e Ilya Frank, quien también compartió el Premio Nobel. La radiación Cherenkov había sido predicha teóricamente por el politólogo inglés Oliver Heaviside en trabajos publicados en 1888-1889.
