Citronellal o rhodinal o 3,7-dimetiloct-6-en-1-al es un monoterpenoid, el componente principal en la mezcla de terpenoid los compuestos químicos que dan el aceite de la citronela su olor distintivo del limón. Citronellal es un importante aislamien- to en aceites destilados de las plantas Cymbopogon, goma de olor a limón y tetera con aroma a limón. El enantiómero de citronellal representa hasta el 80% del aceite de hoja de hojas de lima kaffir y es el compuesto responsable de su aroma característico. Citronellal tiene propiedades repelentes de insectos, y la investigación muestra una alta eficacia repelente contra los mosquitos. Las investigaciones muestran que el citronelal tiene fuertes cualidades antifúngicas.
