Motor diesel
El motor diesel es un motor de combustión interna que utiliza el calor de la compresión para iniciar la ignición y quemar el combustible que se ha inyectado en la cámara de combustión. Esto contrasta con los motores de encendido por chispa, como un motor de gasolina o de gas, que utilizan una bujía para encender una mezcla aire-combustible. El motor diesel tiene la más alta eficiencia térmica de cualquier motor de combustión interna o externa debido a su muy alta relación de compresión. Los motores diesel de baja velocidad pueden tener una eficiencia térmica superior al 50%. Los motores diesel se fabrican en versiones de dos y cuatro tiempos. Se utilizaron originalmente como un reemplazo más eficiente para los motores de vapor estacionarios. Desde la década de 1910 se han utilizado en submarinos y buques. El uso en locomotoras, camiones, equipos pesados y plantas de generación eléctrica se siguió más tarde. En la década de 1930, poco a poco comenzaron a utilizarse en unos pocos automóviles. Desde la década de 1970, el uso de motores diesel en los grandes vehículos de carretera y fuera de carretera en los EE.UU. aumentó.
