En matemáticas, una sección cónica es una curva obtenida como la intersección de un cono con un plano. En la geometría analítica, una cónica puede definirse como una curva algebraica plana de grado 2. Existen varias otras definiciones geométricas posibles. Uno de los más útiles, ya que implica sólo el plano, es que una cónica consiste en aquellos puntos cuyas distancias hasta cierto punto, llamado foco, y alguna línea, llamada directriz, están en una relación fija, llamada excentricidad. Tradicionalmente, los tres tipos de sección cónica son la hipérbola, la parábola y la elipse. El círculo es un caso especial de la elipse, y es de interés suficiente por su propio derecho que a veces se le llama el cuarto tipo de sección cónica. El tipo de cónica corresponde a su excentricidad, aquellos con excentricidad menor que 1 son elipses, aquellos con excentricidad igual a 1 siendo parábolas, y aquellos con excentricidad mayor que 1 son hipérbolas. En la definición de una cónica de directriz de enfoque, el círculo es un caso limitante con excentricidad 0. En la geometría moderna ciertos casos degenerados, como la unión de dos líneas, se incluyen también como cónicas.
