En la física de la materia condensada, un par de Cooper o BCS es un par de electrones unidos juntos a bajas temperaturas de una cierta manera descrita por primera vez en 1956 por el físico estadounidense Leon Cooper. Cooper demostró que una atracción arbitrariamente pequeña entre los electrones en un metal puede causar que un estado pareado de electrones tenga una energía menor que la energía de Fermi, lo que implica que el par está ligado. En los superconductores convencionales, esta atracción se debe a la interacción electrón-phonon. El par de Cooper es responsable de la superconductividad, como se describe en la teoría BCS desarrollada por John Bardeen, Leon Cooper y John Schrieffer, para la que compartieron el Premio Nobel de 1972. Aunque el emparejamiento de Cooper es un efecto cuántico, la razón para el apareamiento se puede ver a partir de una explicación clásica simplificada. Un electrón en un metal normalmente se comporta como una partícula libre. El electrón es rechazado de otros electrones debido a su carga negativa, pero también atrae los iones positivos que componen el retículo rígido del metal.
