Cooperatividad
La cooperación es un fenómeno que se muestra en sistemas que implican elementos idénticos o casi idénticos, que actúan independientemente entre sí, en relación con un sistema hipotético estándar sin interacción en el que los elementos individuales están actuando independientemente. Una manifestación de esto son enzimas o receptores que tienen múltiples sitios de unión donde la afinidad de los sitios de unión para un ligando es aparentemente aumentada, cooperatividad positiva, o disminución, cooperatividad negativa, tras la unión de un ligando a un sitio de unión. Por ejemplo, la afinidad de los cuatro sitios de unión de la hemoglobina por oxígeno se incrementa por encima de la de la hemoglobina no unida cuando se une la primera molécula de oxígeno. Esto se conoce como unión cooperativa. También vemos la cooperatividad en grandes moléculas de cadena hechas de muchas subunidades idénticas, cuando tales moléculas experimentan transiciones de fase tales como la fusión, el despliegue o el desenrollado. Esto se conoce como cooperación de subunidad. Sin embargo, la definición de cooperatividad basada en el aparente aumento o disminución en la afinidad a las sucesivas etapas de unión al ligando es problemática, ya que el concepto de "energía" debe definirse siempre en relación con un estado estándar.
