Un cotiledón es una parte significativa del embrión dentro de la semilla de una planta. Después de la germinación, el cotiledón puede convertirse en las primeras hojas embrionarias de una plántula. El número de cotiledones presentes es una característica utilizada por los botánicos para clasificar las plantas con flores. Las especies con un cotiledón se llaman monocotiledóneas. Los cotiledones se forman durante la embriogénesis, junto con los meristemas de raíces y brotes, y por lo tanto están presentes en la semilla antes de la germinación. Sin embargo, las hojas verdaderas se forman post-embrionalmente a partir del meristema apical del hongo, que es responsable de generar porciones aéreas subsecuentes de la planta. El cotiledón de las gramíneas y muchos otros monocotiledones es una hoja altamente modificada compuesta de un esqueleto y un coleóptilo. El scutellum es un tejido dentro de la semilla que se especializa para absorber el alimento almacenado del endospermo adyacente.
