Un híbrido o mestizo por lo general se refiere a un animal con padres de raza pura de dos razas diferentes, variedades o poblaciones. El cruzamiento, a veces llamado "cruzamiento de diseñador", se refiere al proceso de cría de un animal de este tipo, a menudo con la intención de crear hijos que comparten los rasgos de ambos linajes progenitores, o producir un animal con vigor híbrido. Mientras que el cruzamiento se utiliza para mantener la salud y la viabilidad de los animales, el cruce irresponsable también puede producir animales de calidad inferior o diluir un grupo genético de pura raza hasta el punto de extinción de una determinada raza de animal. El término también se usa a veces para referirse a un animal doméstico de ascendencia desconocida donde se conoce el estado de la raza de solo uno de los padres o abuelos, aunque el término "raza mixta" es técnicamente más preciso.
